“Oh, that You would bless us indeed, and enlarge our territory, that Your hand would be with us.” I Chronicles 4:10
This Prayer of Jabez has been answered here at Madison Campus Church many times over. In 1906 our Madison Campus Church history began as about 20 Seventh-day Adventists began meeting in the parlor of the old plantation house here on the grounds of what would become Madison College. Mrs. White had been impressed by God in 1904 that we should buy the 789 acre plantation for the purpose of beginning a school and medical facility. As the group of believers grew, they first met in a little chapel and then in Gotzian Hall. In 1923, Helen Funk Assembly Hall was built and on Sabbaths this was the church home for 49 years! During this same time members of the Madison Campus Church moved to lonely spots all across the globe to establish work where there was no Adventist presence.
In 1971, our present church building was built, but it wasn’t until 1976 that the two story annex was added to house the Sabbath School classes, youth chapel, fellowship hall, kitchen and offices. During those 5 years, Sabbath School classes and other events were scattered all over the campus, a big inconvenience, especially in bad weather. In 1994, our church was greatly improved with renovation and redecorating in the sanctuary. Also added were the two covered entrances, more classrooms, more foyer area, and an enlarged and the paved parking lot. This project totaled $1,750,000. A new wing to house a larger fellowship hall and more classrooms were in the plans; however the money received at that time was not enough to make that a reality.
The church, in business session, voted in 2002 to finally build the much needed addition and also enlarge the elementary school. Because of the great need at the school, the church board voted to do that project first, and as soon as it was complete, the church family life center was begun. Powell Building Group has not only done a great job on both projects, but accomplished the unheard of: completing both projects before the deadline!
We praise God for what we are able to accomplish and the impact that we can have on souls for Christ because of these buildings. These buildings mean nothing if we cannot use them to bring folks into a meaningful relationship with Christ.
